Dresser & Lamp Makeover

Over the next few weeks I'm going to share some projects from my son's "big boy" room!

His room is nearly complete, and I'm finally ready to start showing it off.

At the end of the month we'll put all of these projects together for the big reveal!

Previous posts in this series:

When trying to figure out what furniture to use in my son's new room, we weren't sure what to do. We had never painted furniture before and most things we owned were a hodgepodge of hand-me-downs.

The dresser above was in the guest bedroom which is now the toddler room. I wasn't a big fan of all that wood so we decided to go out on a limb and give it a paint makeover. And what a difference some black paint can make!

The top of the dresser is smooth with a different finish than the rest of the wood so it was originally taped off until we figured out how we wanted to paint it. After painting the rest of the dresser and removing the tape from the top, we decided we liked the look of the wood on top of the dresser! It gives it some character!

Something else that helps give the dresser some character: lightly sanding the edges on all of the drawers. I *love* how this turned out! It helps to define the drawers so you're not just looking at a sea of black.

We kept the same hardware on the dresser and simply gave it a fresh look with some spray paint.

(The dresser was actually repainted last November so I can't for the life of me remember which spray paint brands and names we used!)

I lucked out and found a great black lamp base and a shade to go with it at Walmart.

It was definitely a lamp that I thought would "grow" with my toddler. But it was a little Plain Jane so I scoured the internet for ideas of something to do to it.

The stripes were inspired by this lamp shade from Pottery Barn.

I really like how the simple stripes dress the lamp up and keep it masculine!

I simply used blue painter's tape to tape off my stripes and black acrylic paint. Its not a super clean edge, but I kind of like it that way!

All lit up!

I definitely think that this dresser and lamp will be something that will be able to stay in my son's room through the years. And, who knows, maybe one day it go to college with him! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's almost 3, and I certainly want to keep him little for quite a while longer. :)

  1. Oh my goodness! I have the exact same dresser - it was my dad's when he was growing up and it was passed on to me when I got married! I painted mine white and antiqued it last summer. Love how your makeover turned out!

  10. It looks great!! But I have a question.... HOW did you do it?? Did you sand it first before you painted? Did you use a lot of spray paint? Do you remember if it was glossy or flat? Any other info would be great... I have a hope chest that I want to turn black like this but I don't know where to start :) THANKS!!
