Faux Mercury Glass Skull

I have been wanting to try the faux mercury glass look for ages.
It makes glass feel like it has a story to tell, don’t you think?
And it also is a technique that is perfect for Halloween!

I found this big glass skull votive at Home Goods last month.
I thought it was so cool, though the glass really makes it difficult to see all of the features.
Regardless, for $5 it had a LOT of potential in my eyes.
I’ve been debating every since I purchased it what to do with it.
After seeing Jenn’s faux mercury glass dominoes, I was convinced to go in the same direction with this skull!
For this project you need two things:
A spray bottle containing 50% H2O and 50% vinegar
Krylon’s Looking Glass spray paint
I decided to test out my technique on some cheap glass votives before taking on the skull.
The process is pretty basic.
Clean the glass, spritz the water/vinegar solution, spray paint.
After a minute or so you can blot off the water droplets.
Repeat as necessary.
I did two rounds of spritzing/painting/blotting with these votive holders.
Time to try it on the skull!
I ended up doing three rounds of spritzing/painting/blotting.
There were a few places on the skull where the coverage was a little too good.
I simply sprayed some of my water/vinegar solution on a paper towel and gently rubbed to remove some of the paint.
Don’t rub too hard or you will remove more paint than you probably want to.
I put a small battery power tea light in the skull to see how he would look at night.
What a great effect!
The paint really helps bring out the features of the skull.
And the faux mercury glass makes him look even spookier!
I’m itching to paint everything in my house now… 😉

The outside, Angela. I couldn't even get to the inside. This guy was solid glass except for where the indent for the tea light. :)
