The quest continues to fill my son’s room with superhero paraphernalia.
As a parent you know this can get pretty expensive pretty quickly.
So what’s a frugal, crafty mama to do? Start creating my own superhero paraphernalia, that’s what!
Today I want to show you how I turned this framed 16×24 photo into a unique piece of superhero art!
Unfortunately we are moving out of the toddler fire truck-themed room and giving it an overhaul into a superhero-themed room. I hate to see this photo go (how cute is that kid? and how did he get so big?),
but it doesn’t fit the new theme.
Sooooo… I’m replacing that super cute kiddo with a super big superhero!
You will need a piece of poster board. Trim it down to fit your frame if necessary.
You can use any color, there are no rules here! 😉
Find an image online of the superhero you want to use. Download the image and blow it up so that it will fit in your frame. To save on printer ink you can make the image white then create an outline around the image.
Split the image into 4 sections that will each fit on an 8.5×11″ sheet of paper. Print the 4 images then cut them out.
Piece the images together and hold them together with some tape.
On the back of the poster board lay the superhero image face down on the paper and trace around the image.
Cut out the image on the poster board. A swivel X-acto knife is the easiest tool to use.
Select the background you want to use for your image. I chose blue polka dot scrapbook paper.
You can use scrapbook paper, tissue paper, poster board, fabric… the possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
Since 1 sheet of scrapbook paper was too small to fill the entire image, I used two and pieced it together as seamlessly as possible, taping the back side to hold it together.
Place the scrapbook paper (or whatever media you are using) behind the poster board and tape it down.
If you cut anything out of the superhero image such as the logo or spaces between body parts you can add those on now. Replace the image of the superhero that you cut out of the poster board. Adhere the logo and cut outs to the scrapbook paper.
Now you have an awesome over sized superhero image!
You could also make these on small scale. A cluster of 8×10 frames each with a different superhero would make for some really fun room decor, too!

This is so cool!! I love your method of piecing together the large image - it makes it so you can have a large image out of anything! That Superman is so cool! I am loving all these projects for his room - it is going to look so fabulous!
