The BEST Gummy Recipe

A lot of variables go into good gummies so try these tested ideas for the BEST gummy recipe!

The BEST Gummy Recipe
One of the fun things I made for the Lego Birthday Party is gummy Lego bricks and Lego minifigurines!

I scoured the web for a recipe and, let me tell you, there are several variables out there.

I was looking for something quick and simple without a lot of steps because, let’s face it, this was a fun extra for the party, not a main focus.

I tried a pretty basic recipe and found that the gummies had absolutely NO taste. Blech!!

So I came up with a recipe of my own that is still quick and simple and FULL of flavor!

I used these Lego molds (affiliate link) and my recipe is the perfect amount to fill them up without leftovers.

This is a quick, simple, and flavorful gummy recipe!

Cook Time 15 minutes
Additional Time 1 day
Total Time 1 day 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 oz. unflavored gelatin
  • 1 oz. flavored Jello
  • 1/4 tsp Kool-Aid

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup of water on low heat.
  2. Mix gelatin, Jello, and Kool-Aid in a small bowl.
  3. Add gelatin mix slowly to water while stirring. Slowly bring mixture to a boil, stirring frequently.
  4. Boil for 3 minutes then pour in mold.
  5. Place in the freezer overnight.
  6. Thaw, then serve immediately or place in an airtight container in the fridge.
Gummies will be good for ~10 days.

Notes

I’ve got a few tips for you to achieve the PERFECT gummy!

  • Bringing the gelatin mixture to a bowl slowly is a MUST! Be patient so that everything thing has a chance to dissolve.
  • Speaking of dissolve, try not to get distracted while making the gummies. Stirring frequently is important to make sure that the gelatin doesn’t try to harden in the saucepan.
  • Transfer the boiled gelatin solution to a measuring cup for pouring. It makes the process of filling the mold easy peasy.
  • If you are using a silicone mold you should not need to spray them with cooking spray before use. The gummies should easily pop out after thawing from being in the freezer.
  • After pouring the gelatin solution into the molds, allow them to cool on the counter for ~1 hour. This will
allow the gelatin to start to set so that when you transfer the molds to the freezer you won’t risk the solution spilling out.
  • Got bubbles? Most bubbles should disappear on their own, but you can use a paper towel to wick up bubbles for those stubborn ones that don’t want to pop. Be sure to pour the gelatin solution slowly into the molds to prevent bubbles from forming at the bottom of the mold.

The BEST Gummy Recipe
Want to make sour gummies?

Use an entire packet of Kool-Aid instead of 1/4 teaspoon.

That will do the trick!

The gummy above on the left was made with an entire packet of Kool-Aid, the one on the right with just a 1/4 teaspoon.

You can see that the extra Kool-Aid effects the coloring of the gummy.

It is opaque.

It also effects the taste.

Very sour!!

So if you like that kind of thing, go for it!

The flavors I used were:

Red gummies: strawberry Jello, strawberry Kool-Aid

Yellow gummies: lemon Jello, lemon Kool-Aid

Blue gummies: berry-blue Jello, mixed berry Kool-Aid

I definitely have been making these for years. I never put them in the freezer especially overnight it becomes a watery mess after but definitely let them stay room temp for an hour and then transfer to fridge, I sugared them after and they were pretty great

How odd! I've never had an issue with them being watery after coming out of the freezer. I think the trick is to leave them on the counter for a bit so they can start to set up before putting them in there. I'll have to try sugaring them. Sounds great!

Hi! Beautiful site! Have you tried with sugar-free jello? If so, what amount of it did you use? (Since 3oz jello = .3 sugar free, I am thinking of starting out with 1/10th of an oz, but not sure if I'll get enough bulk?). Thanks!

I have not tried the sugar free Jello. So I did a little research and it sounds like you are correct!
