Rustic Chalkboard Sign

This Rustic Chalkboard Sign is perfect for weddings and/or home decor!

 If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times. I absolutely love a project that is multi-purpose! And that is exactly what today’s project is all about.

I have been wanting to make a giant wood slice project for ages, and I finally have one! This Rustic Chalkboard Sign is the perfect accessory for a wedding. You can write any message on it and place it anywhere at the wedding or reception. It would be great as a welcome sign for guests, on the guest book table instructing guests what to do, or even next to the wedding cake stating a congratulatory note to the new couple. The possibilities are endless!

And then… after the wedding is over the couple can take the sign home and use in their home decor, writing whatever message suits them… put it in the kitchen and post the dinner menu on it. Put it in the living room with a sweet message. In the entryway with a greeting for house guests. Super fun, right??

Supplies:
Giant wood slice (Joann’s)
Americana Multi-Surface Satin paint in Night Sky, Red Barn, Deep Turquoise, and Eggplant
Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating
Various paintbrushes
Chalk

First, paint the front of the wood slice with Night Sky, leaving a ~1/2″ around the edge unpainted. It will soak into the wood a little bit so apply 2 coats.

Once this the paint is completely dry, follow the instructions on the Clear Chalkboard Coating bottle to apply 2 coats to the wood slice.

After allowing the Clear Chalkboard Coating to cure, add some decorative touches to the new chalkboard.

I used Deep Turquoise to add some leafy stems.

Then I followed up by adding some florals in Red Barn and Eggplant, using a small flat brush for the red and super thin tip brush for the purple.

Once all of the paint is dry, “cure” the chalkboard by rubbing chalk all over it then erasing it.

Write your message and set the wood slice on a display stand. Now you’re ready to decorate!
