Why is it pineapples look good in just about any color?

I’ve been seeing various neon-colored pineapples pop up in craft projects all summer long on the interwebs, and they all look SO fun!

It just so happens that I have a fun little pineapple “statue” of sorts I scored at Target a couple of years back that is navy (my living room accent colors are navy and yellow), and it is amazing.

With the FloraCraft® Make It: Fun challenge this month being summer wall art, I knew another navy pineapple was in my future!

I mean, can you have too many of those?

I’m in the process of dressing up my entryway, and I knew this 3D Pineapple Wall Art would look perfect there.

3D Pineapple Wall Art: Shape

I found a pineapple silhouette that I liked in Google Images, downloaded it, and blew it up to the size I wanted my pineapple wall art to be.

I had to separate the image onto 2 separate sheets of paper so I printed each sheet then taped them together.

I finally got to use my Styro Cutter Plus to carve the foam sheet!

It’s a slow process, but SO much less messy that makes it totally worthwhile.

I started by trimming down the sheet of foam to a workable area.

I then cut out the pineapple silhouette and traced it onto the foam and cut it out with the Styro Cutter.

I used the shaping tool from the Tool Set to further smooth out the sides of the pineapple and round the front edges.

3D Pineapple Wall Art: Smooth Finish

I coated the entire pineapple in a super thin coat of Smooth Finish.

After that dried, I applied a thicker coat of the Smooth Finish to the front and sides.

Once the 2nd coat was dry I sanded the entire thing smooth.

Then I place the pineapple template over the foam version and traced over the various segments with the round end of the scribe tool from the Tool Set.

That indented the Smooth Finish and transferred the pineapple pattern.

3D Pineapple Wall Art: Paint

Next up, apply a couple of coats of paint.

I love this Dark Denim color.

It’s a great shade of navy!

To bring out the segments of the pineapple, I painted each one very lightly with the Gold Rush wax.

Once it was applied, I went back and buffed the gold with a paper towel to bring out the shine.

3D Pineapple Wall Art: Greenery

I found a great greenery stem at Hobby Lobby to act as the stem of the pineapple.

It was in 3 sections so I cut each one off and left about 1 1/2″ at each end.

Stick the ends of the stems into the top of the pineapple.

They will hold in the foam nicely, but you can add adhesive to the stems before sticking them through if you’re worried about them coming out.

Finally, I added some 3M Fastener Strips to the back of the pineapple and hung it on the wall in my entryway.

The 3D pineapple wall art is fun and spunky, and definitely a conversation piece.

I can’t wait to finish the space!

And the best part of this summer wall art challenge?

I can actually keep this pineapple up all year long!

Your pineapple turned out so cute! I love the color you choose to paint it. I would love to make one of these for my house, but I don't think I could carve the foam to look right. Maybe I can order a custom foam sculpture. That sure would make things easier.
