I've been wanting to make a red, white, and blue wreath for a while and finally decided to make the time for it.

The final version is not what I originally imagined, but it is so much better!

In fact, I think this Beautiful Burlap & Denim Ruffled Patriotic Wreath is my favorite wreath to date!

I have to confess that I woke up at 3 am in the morning for no reason in particular.

Could NOT fall back to sleep to save my life.

So what's a girl to do?

Run through design scenarios for my next craft project: the patriotic wreath!

That's how the ruffles came to be.

Beautiful Burlap & Denim Ruffled Patriotic Wreath Video

I've got a super quick video that shows you all the steps to making this darling wreath.

Check it out for a quick visual rundown.

Burlap & Denim Ruffled Patriotic Wreath Directions:

I started with a straw wreath form, some red satin ribbon, and my trusty Beacon's 3-in-1 adhesive (affiliate link).

I wrapped the wreath form with the ribbon because I wasn't sure how well the burlap would cover the wreath as far as being able to see the base.

Luckily it would not end up being a problem...

Because I ran out of ribbon thus the gap in the above picture.

Next step: Gather my fabrics!

I could have sworn I owned some red burlap.

But apparently I imagined that!

So I spray painted some white burlap I had on hand, and it worked like a dream.

It is still perfectly flexible and feels like burlap.

Love it when that works out!

I cut my new red burlap and more of the white burlap into 2" strips.

Then I hand-stitched crochet thread through the top of each strip to make ruffles.

Crochet thread is thicker and manipulates the burlap better than regular embroidery thread would.

Burlap & Denim Ruffled Patriotic Wreath NOTE:

I get a lot of questions about the length of the strips I cut.

All of the fabric I used are remnants so the length varies.

This doesn't really affect the overall project.

Once you run out of 1 strip, move on to the next.

adhere ruffles to wreath form
I glued the ruffles to the back of the wreath, layering the white and red.

Then I started wrapping the ruffles around the wreath.

When I would get to the end of a strip of ruffles I would glue on another one.

I wrapped about ¾ of the wreath this way.

I think I ended up using 5 strips of red and 6 of white.

alternating fabrics for ruffles
I repeated the ruffling technique with the denim material and proceeded to wrap the rest of the wreath.

I'm loving all of those ruffles!

But something is missing on that denim area...

burlap and denim ruffled patriotic wreath button stars

I need some "stars" for my denim.

Buttons seemed like the perfect accessories to be stars AND I have a lot of them.

So it's time to break out the button stash!

I glued various sized buttons randomly to the denim ruffles.

I love the eclectic assortment of buttons!

Now this patriotic wreath is complete!

The rustic look is really appealing to me.

And you cannot even tell the red burlap is spray painted.

I just keep wanting to go stand on my front porch and stare at my new beautiful burlap & denim ruffled patriotic wreath!

So the lesson here is: If you wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep, ponder you next craft project.

You may just perfect it!

  5. I , too, have a problem with waking up in the middle of the night and crafting in my head. I think that's both the blessing and the curse of being a crafter. But I suppose there are worse problems to have.

Your wreath turned out totally awesome. I'm sure it's added a wonderful touch to your front door. I love to decorate for the 4th of July. The red, while, and blue colors are just so colorful and make me feel blessed to be living in America (even with all it's problems.)

Thanks for sharing this beautiful wreath. It was one of our 5 features today on Dare to Share Saturday. I am excited to share such a beautiful wreath and hope you'll continue stopping by and sharing more great projects!

  6. CUTE CUTE CUTE!!! Love how it turned out! Thanks so much for taking the time to link up with us over at the #HomeMattersParty - we hope to see you again on Friday!

  7. I would love to make it but how long and wide are the strips of burlap? You show 19 inches but the fabric is actually going from 19 up past 21. Thanks.

    1. Dianna,
Measure the circumference of the wreath (around one section - not the width) then triple the length of your burlap strip, gather into the ruffle and glue around the wreath. -In other words, wrap the burlap around the wreath once, measure what it takes to go around the wreath one time and triple that for fullness in the ruffle. It will be beautiful!

  8. Pinned and I hope I can carve out the time to make one, I just love this!

  9. I wanna make this for a Girl Scout project for my State fair but it does not tell me how much burlap I need :/

  10. I tried this the more I pulled the stitches on the burlap the bigger mess I had, I guess it is easlier than what I am making it to be,, I really do not like giving up on making things, but this getting the best of me.. what am I doing wrong. maybe I will do better with just strips of material instead of burlap.. going to start over tomorrow and see what I can do.. your is so pretty.

    1. Be sure you leave about a 1/2 of burlap *above* where you are stitching. This will help prevent it from unraveling and making a big mess.

  11. Love it, going to try to make one for my mama, her bd is on the 4th, but call me crazy, but do you do long strips, or short strips, glue, then another short strip,I just can't seem to get it in my head..seems like doing several shorts strips would be easier but you said only 5 or 6 of each, so I think you did long ones,so did you leave a space and come back in with the white,, thanks for any help, crazy Debbie

    1. I did long strips, Debbie. As long as I could with the materials I had. As I wrapped the wreath form in red, I left a gap between the rows so I could come back with the with.

  12. Is there a certain width and legnth of the burlap and jean strips that were used?? Beautiful wreath, love it!

    1. Thank you, Kylie! The width of the strips was approximately 2" and the length was however it came off of the bolt. About 36"?

  13. Fell in love with this and finally made my own tonight. I'll be posting it on Monday.

    Thanks for the great idea!!

    -Leah

  14. I just came to your blog today via Transformation Thursday. I'm enjoying perusing your projects. This wreath is super cool! It's good to know that you can spray paint burlap. That means I can have more color options than what may be available at the fabric store. Thanks for sharing!
    Blessings,
