Faux Knob Storage Jars

I received free product from DecoArt for this post. As always, all opinions and ideas are my own.
faux-knob-jar-storageRemember all of those storage round up posts I did in January? I hinted pretty heavily that my craft space was getting a big makeover. And it’s almost complete! I’m hoping to share it in just a couple more weeks.

In addition to big new storage for the space, I’m also looking for small new storage to match. These Faux Knob Storage Jars have been on my radar to make for a while! They are super cute and super functional. That’s a win/win, don’t you think? And the faux knob part? WAY easier than having to deal with drilling holes for real knobs.

decoart-multi-surface-paintI am using really fun, really bright colors in my craft room makeover in hopes of inspiring creativity. I found some great glass jars to dress up. The problem? I want to paint the metal lid, the glass jar, and wooden toy wheels all in the same colors. Regular acrylic paint isn’t going to work on all of these surfaces and finding the right colors of spray paint will prove pretty challenging. I decided to give the Americana Multi-Surface Satin paints from DecorArt a try since they are supposed to cover no less than 9 different surfaces, including the ones I wanted to paint.

So, here’s our supply list:
Storage jars
Wooden toy wheels
Acrylic diamond multi-pack
Americana Multi-Surface Satin paint (Flamingo, Chartreuse, Deep Turquiose)
Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating
E6000 adhesive

bright-crafy-storageI applied several coats of paint to the lids and fronts of the jars. The directions say to allow an hour until adding a new coat, but by using thin coats I was able to speed up that timetable. It only took 2 coats for good coverage on the wagon wheels.

The paint looks fabulous on all of the surfaces and does have a nice satin finish to it.

Fill the hole in the wheel with E6000 then insert the pointed tip of one of the larger diamonds into the hole. Swirl the diamond a bit to get good covereage of the adhesive on the diamond. Give it a few minutes to start to dry then glue the base of the wheel to the center of the lid. Instant “knob” look with absolutely no drilling! Plus I think this method is a lot less expensive than purchasing a lot of knobs.

I wanted my colors all mixed up so each of my jars has the 3 different colors on it.

Once the knobs are completely dry, apply the clear chalkboard coating to the paint on the front of the jars. I applied 2 thin coats following the directions on the bottle.

I gave the chalkboard coating a good 24 hours to dry before “curing” the surface with chalk.

colorful-storage-jarsThese storage jars turned out fabulous and really look great in my space. I cannot WAIT to give you guys the full reveal! I’ve been giving LOTS of sneak peeks on Instagram and Facebook so make sure you’re following me there.

In the meantime, I’ll be finding more things to use this paint on. I’m in love!

I loved the faux knob project! I have 5 granddaughters and they all use at least 3 colors, so this project is a great idea for making various storage options such as different colors for making some original canvas art, storage containers of different sizes and shapes to hold hair accessories, in different sha
