BML Guest Post – Simone from Doberman’s By The Sea

April 1, 2011 By: Michele McDonald8 Comments

Today I will show you how to make a sea glass key chain or purse attachment.

You will need a pair of pliers, sea glass, wire 18 to 24 gauge, key ring. The wire and key ring can be purchased at a department store or online. I used sea glass I found on the beach, but it can also be purchased online at some Etsy stores, for instance.

Start by creating the design in your head, so you will have an idea of how to loop the wire. I recommend using more wire rather than less. Cut a generous amount of wire, about 20 inches. Grab one end of the wire and curl the bail in itself a few times using the pliers. Place the bail on the lower front of the sea glass, press down on the bail with one hand while looping the wire around the bottom and to the back-see picture below.

Next, loop the wire from behind the right side across the front side towards the top left corner.

Then loop it around back and across the front again, and then diagonal again. There are different patterns you can do, just make sure the wire is snug and all angles are covered, so the glass won’t slip out.

You’ll want to end your wrapping with the wire on the back of the sea glass. Now make a loop by placing the wire over the pliers. I wrapped the shorter end of the wire around itself to hold the bail, but there are different ways of doing this. Cut of any excess wire.

Thread the key ring through the loop and attach it to a set of keys.

Or to a purse, as in the picture on top of the page. Et Voila! Done.
This is a great gift for guys or girls and it is easy and inexpensive to make.

What a lovely craft! Sea glass always reminds me of weekends spent beachcombing in my childhood. What a sweet reminder it would be to carry around on one’s purse or keys!
