DIY Flag Planter

June 8, 2020 By: Michele McDonald98 Comments

I teamed up with Coupons.com to create a DIY outdoor 4th of July project.

This flag planter is one of my favorite projects to date! I love showing off patriotic flair in my outdoor spaces and this planter is a great addition. It mixes my love of the red, white, and blue and my green thumb.

I designed this planter, but did ask the hubs to cut the wood and put it together for me. He’s such a champ! I did go pick out and purchase the wood myself if that counts!

I have included dimension if you want to try to create one yourself. It is very basic.

After the planter was put together, I painted the front to look like a flag. I applied 2 coats of each color.

I painted the rest of the crate with a neat glaze I found from Martha Stewart called Black Coffee. It has just a hint of metallic to it, and almost makes the wood look stained! I only applied one coat since I’m going for a slight rustic look and wanted some of the wood to show through.

I did not have a good template on hand to use for my stars so I improvised! I rummaged through my acrylic stamp collection and found some doily button stamps that I thought would really help add to the vintage heirloom feel I was going for.

To use the stamp with regular paint I applied the paint directly to the stamps with a small paintbrush, blotted the stamp once, then stamped lightly on to the planter.

Because the red and white looked super bright and not “antique” enough I used a rag to lightly apply some of the Black Coffee glaze on top of the flag. It gave it that slight rustic look I was going for!

I love how the planter turned out! And I can turn it around and use the back side if I want to and not show the flag.

At the Jo-Ann site, I’d use the 40% coupon to buy beads. I was always into beady, crafty things. How about red, white and blue beads? At Depot, I would use the overstock link and search for flooring. A new floor would be aces with me as a 4th of July project (or anytime).
