Wow! That blog title is a mouthful! But it is what it is… And this is a Burlap & Denim Ruffled Patriotic Wreath!
I’ve been wanting to make a red, white, and blue wreath for a while and finally decided to make the time for it. The final version is not what I originally imagined, but it is so much better!
I have to confess that I woke up at 3 am in the morning for no reason in particular. Could NOT fall back to sleep to save my life. So what’s a girl to do? Run through design scenarios for my next craft project: the patriotic wreath! That’s how the ruffles came to be.
I’ve got a super quick video that shows you all the steps to making this darling wreath.
I started with a wreath form, some red satin ribbon, and my trusty Beacon’s 3-in-1 adhesive.
I wrapped the wreath form with the ribbon because I wasn’t sure how well the burlap would cover the wreath. Luckily it would not end up being a problem…
Because I ran out of ribbon thus the gap in the above picture.
I could have sworn I owned some red burlap. But apparently I imagined that! So I spray painted some white burlap I had on hand, and it worked like a dream. Love it when that works out!
I cut my new red burlap and more of the white burlap into 2″ strips. Then I hand-stitched crochet thread through the top of each strip to make ruffles.
Edit: I get a lot of questions about the length of the strips I cut. All of the fabric I used are remnants so the length varies. This doesn’t really affect the overall project. Once you run out of 1 strip, move on to the next.
I glued the ruffles to the back of the wreath, layering the white and red.
Then I started wrapping the ruffles around the wreath. When I would get to the end of a strip of ruffles I would glue on another one. I wrapped about 3/4 of the wreath this way. I think I ended up using 5 strips of red and 6 of white.
I repeated the ruffling technique with the denim material and proceeded to wrap the rest of the wreath.
I’m loving all of those ruffles! But something is missing…
I need some “stars” for my denim so it’s time to break out the button stash!
I glued various sized buttons randomly to the denim ruffles.
The rustic look is really appealing to me. I just keep wanting to go stand on my front porch and stare at it!
So the lesson here is: If you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep, ponder you next craft project. You may just perfect it!
>> See where I party! <<
This is so creative. Loved it ๐
Beyond cute. Going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing such awesome wreath DIY project.
I love your patriotic summer wreath. I will be featuring it in my Summer Wreaths at Merry Monday on Sunday at 6pm pst. Hope to see you at the party.
Thanks for sharing your patriotic wreath at the Inspiration Spotlight party @DearCreatives See you again soon. Pinnned & sharing.
The buttons on the blue really pop! #busymonday
This is such a pretty burlap wreath for patriotic holidays. I didn’t know you can spray paint burlap, that’s a great way to get the colors you want. Thank you for linking up with us at the #HomeMattersParty this week!
So, so cute! I have never seen a design like this! Pinning.
Wow you are a one creative person ๐ please check out my blog for more denim ideas: http://fashionallure.com/denim-outfit-ideas-2015/
I , too, have a problem with waking up in the middle of the night and crafting in my head. I think that’s both the blessing and the curse of being a crafter. But I suppose there are worse problems to have.
Your wreath turned out totally awesome. I’m sure it’s added a wonderful touch to your front door. I love to decorate for the 4th of July. The red, while, and blue colors are just so colorful and make me feel blessed to be living in America (even with all it’s problems.)
Thanks for sharing this beautiful wreath. It was one of our 5 features today on Dare to Share Saturday. I am excited to share such a beautiful wreath and hope you’ll continue stopping by and sharing more great projects!
CUTE CUTE CUTE!!! Love how it turned out! Thanks so much for taking the time to link up with us over at the #HomeMattersParty – we hope to see you again on Friday!
Beautiful!
This is such an amazing idea! Thanks for sharing it. I’m Anita visiting from Artsy-Fartsy.
Hi! I was wondering if you thought I could do this with burlap from rolls rather than the bolt? Thanks!!
Absolutely!! I don’t see any reason why not.
I would love to make it but how long and wide are the strips of burlap? You show 19 inches but the fabric is actually going from 19 up past 21. Thanks.
Dianna,
Measure the circumference of the wreath (around one section – not the width) then triple the length of your burlap strip, gather into the ruffle and glue around the wreath. -In other words, wrap the burlap around the wreath once, measure what it takes to go around the wreath one time and triple that for fullness in the ruffle. It will be beautiful!
Pinned and I hope I can carve out the time to make one, I just love this!

I wanna make this for a Girl Scout project for my State fair but it does not tell me how much burlap I need :/
I tried this the more I pulled the stitches on the burlap the bigger mess I had, I guess it is easlier than what I am making it to be,, I really do not like giving up on making things, but this getting the best of me.. what am I doing wrong. maybe I will do better with just strips of material instead of burlap.. going to start over tomorrow and see what I can do.. your is so pretty.
Be sure you leave about a 1/2 of burlap *above* where you are stitching. This will help prevent it from unraveling and making a big mess.
thanks , will try again, already done the blue, it looks good.
Love it, going to try to make one for my mama, her bd is on the 4th, but call me crazy, but do you do long strips, or short strips, glue, then another short strip,I just can’t seem to get it in my head..seems like doing several shorts strips would be easier but you said only 5 or 6 of each, so I think you did long ones,so did you leave a space and come back in with the white,, thanks for any help, crazy Debbie
I did long strips, Debbie. As long as I could with the materials I had. As I wrapped the wreath form in red, I left a gap between the rows so I could come back with the with.
Is there a certain width and legnth of the burlap and jean strips that were used?? Beautiful wreath, love it!
Thank you, Kylie! The width of the strips was approximately 2″ and the length was however it came off of the bolt. About 36″?
Fell in love with this and finally made my own tonight. I’ll be posting it on Monday.
Thanks for the great idea!!
-Leah
I would love to see it, Leah! I do hope you’ll come back and leave a link. ๐
I just came to your blog today via Transformation Thursday. I’m enjoying perusing your projects. This wreath is super cool! It’s good to know that you can spray paint burlap. That means I can have more color options than what may be available at the fabric store. Thanks for sharing!
Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks! Kathi
Unbelievably cute wreath. I’m pinning it and including it in a little collection of DIYs I put together… http://darlingadventures.com/?p=999
I put a Pin on it. ๐
Oh, Melz, you have hit my weak spot. I am not very good at estimating fabric yardage! I would say that two yards of burlap would be more than enough (1 of red and 1 of regular), and half a yard of the denim?
Can you give me an approximate yardage for the fabrics used? This is SO DARLING and I’d love to make one! ๐ Thanks so much!
I was just wondering how wide you cut your strips of burlap & denim (inch wise)? Thanks so much!
April
Hi April! The length of the burlap was whatever came off of the original bolt. Probably ~36″? And the width of the strips was 2″. ๐
Just pinned your wreath – love it!
Would love it if you would share it {or any of your creative projects} with my readers and post it on my web site – http://www.ohmy-creative.com
