Footprint Turkey Shirts

November 22, 2011 By: Michele McDonald16 Comments

If you follow me on Facebook you’ve already seen this sneak peek of my boys’ turkey shirts
when I shared it last night.

I whipped them up just in the nick of time!
I was inspired to make these from this cute image I found on Pinterest.
They were pretty simple, I have to say!
And that is always good with me since I tend to be a bit of a procrastinator. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s an easy peasy breakdown of how I made them:
Footprint: I took some acrylic paint (metallic copper from Folk Art) and mixed it with Folk Art’s textile medium so that the paint would be more flexible on clothing and would wash well. I painted my boys’ feet and had them step on their shirts. I brushed more paint on the footprints to make it look more solid. Let it dry overnight.

Feathers: I made a template for turkey feathers out of a piece of cardstock. I searched my fabric stash for cute “feather” material and came up with 7 different remnants (everything in my stash is remnants – I love them!). I cut rectangles of the fabric that would hold up to 3 “feathers” side-by-side them laid the rectangles out on a piece of fusible webbing (I was able to fit all 7 rectangles on one piece of webbing. Then I simply cut out my feathers using my template. I arranged them around the footprints (1 set for the baby’s onesie, and two sets overlayed one another on the big boy shirt) and ironed them down.

Turkey Face: I glued on googly eyes with Beacon’s Fabri-Tac and painted on a beak and “gobbler” (I can never remember what that red thing on turkey’s is called!!).

My oldest LOVES his shirt! He’s so excited to match his baby brother. He was showing it off to everyone at daycare this morning when I dropped him off. ๐Ÿ™‚

And, yep, they are wearing them to daycare today so I can wash them tomorrow and have them ready to wear again on Thanksgiving.

Also, here is my little man’s turkey shirt from last year.

Now on to figure out how to make cranberry sauce… ๐Ÿ˜‰
