Super simple Stars & Stripes bunting for July 4th home decor – you won’t believe what it’s made from!
From Memorial Day to Labor Day the main colors you’ll find in my house are red, white, and blue. I love to decorate my space with our country’s colors and celebrate our heritage during the summer months. You can imagine that I have quite a bit of patriotic home decor, but I that doesn’t mean it all screams USA. I like to subtly add touches here and there.
This stars & stripes bunting is the perfect addition to my summer decor. And you won’t believe what it’s made out of!
All of that bunting started out as 4 placemats! 2 white with large blue stars and 2 white with red stripes. I found these beauties at Old Time Pottery.
Depending on how much bunting you want to make with depend on how many placemats you will need. These 4 will make 12 pieces of bunting.
Cut each placemat into three equal sections.
Sew a new seam along the cut edge of each strip of placemat to prevent fraying. Try to make it match the seam already on the rest of the placemat so that it blends in.
Note: I recommend using a heavy duty needle on your sewing machine for this project.
Fold each strip in half lengthwise, right side out. Stitch across 1″ from the fold
Run twine through the newly made tunnel in the top of the bunting, alternating the stars and strips. An easy way to do this is the tape the end of the twine to a small dowel rod or Popsicle stick and run it through the bunting.
Now it’s time to hang it!
I thought this bunting was perfect to hang in the window in my living room. There was plenty of bunting pieces to stretch across the frame (and still some left over for another window!). And, bonus, since the bunting is patterned on the front and the back it look great inside and outside of the house!
Think outside the box when it comes to your home decor. Not only can you create projects that are less expensive with non traditional items, but also unique pieces that no one else will have!

This project is a really pretty update on the traditional July 4th bunting. I love the fabric that you chose, and the shape/size of your bunting is perfect in your window. Very pretty!
