DIY Pumpkin Jars

Pumpkins are definitely my go-to accessory for fall decorating. In fact, they are just about the only decor I use! I have collected them in all shapes and sizes, and in all different types of media. I also love to come up with ideas to create them from scratch for some unique home decor!
I have seen a lot of cute painted Mason jar vases around the blogosphere. I thought an orange one with a green lid would make for an adorable pumpkin! Let me show you how I made it.

I found this paint at Hobby Lobby next to their glass section. It wasn’t expensive so I thought I would give it a try since it says its specifically for painting glass. I know you can use acrylic paint also on these jars.
I applied 2-3 coats of paint (until I had the coverage I wanted) allowing each coat to dry before moving on to the next. After the paint was completely dry, I lightly sanded the jar with a metal file. I focused mainly on the images on the jar so they would show through.
I painted the lids with my new favorite shade of green: Krylon’s Seaweed.
I also used it last month on my jack-o-lantern treat jars.
I rummaged around the backyard for a fairly thick stick on the ground. I cut it into three pieces leaving the bottom flat and angling the top. I gave the pieces a good sanding to smooth the edges and get the dirt off. Then I baked the sticks in oven at 200 degrees for 2 hours to kill any bugs or parasites that might be in the wood. I hot glued the sticks to the lids to act as the pumpkin stems.
I used raffia to tie a knot around the base of the stems. It covers up any imperfections where the stem meets the lid.
Aren’t they fun? I love the rustic look they have.
And now I have more pumpkins to use in my fall decor!
I think a snowman Mason jar may be in order next. 😉

What a cute idea. Now if only I can summon the courage to give up my canning jars for crafts instead of canning…. ha ha!
Congrats on your feature on the #HomeMattersParty
