Baking season is upon us, y’all! Whether baking for the local bake sale, holiday potlucks, or your own gathering, I have a super simple way for you to dress up your cakes and cupcakes with a chocolate cake topper. People will think you spent so much time in the kitchen, but you’ll know better! You can even buy plain cupcakes and cakes from the local grocery and add your own custom chocolate toppers! Shhhhhhh, I won’t tell!
Supplies:
Wilton Electric Candy Melting Pot
Make ‘n Mold Squeeze Bottles
Assorted Candy Melts
Wax Paper
Toothpicks
Printable Chocolate Templates
This candy melting pot is the best thing to come into my life lately! Melting chocolate in the microwave can be so easily messed up, not to mention you have to work fast before it starts to cool. But this pot will warm and melt the chocolate and keep it at the perfect temperature while you use a little at a time.
Melt the chocolate wafers that you want to use first in the melting pot.
Lay a piece of wax paper on the printed chocolate toppers template.
Fill one of the squeeze bottles with the melted chocolate. The bottles have a fine tip making them easy to “write” with.
Trace the designs from the template onto the wax paper, making the designs fairly thick so they won’t break when peeling up. Keep a wet paper towel and a toothpick nearby for touch ups as needed. There is no rush to work quickly. The chocolate will stay warm in the bottle for quite some time. The tip of the nozzle will start to dry first. Simply remove the top from the bottle, place it in a small glass jar, and microwave for 20-30 seconds to remelt the chocolate.
Using one color melting chocolate at a time, trace all designs you want to use. Add a line of chocolate under “Merry Christmas” to make it easier to place on top of a cake.
Once dry, carefully peel all designs from the wax paper.
Gently press the bottom of the chocolate Merry Christmas into the icing on the cake. Add a chocolate holly to each side.
If you’re responsible for baking, but are in a crunch, adding a homemade chocolate cake topper to store bought cakes and cupcakes will totally take them to the next level!
Didn’t Christmas cake topper and cupcake toppers turn out fun? And people will think you spent so much time on them! But you and I know they were pretty simple to make.
I’m thinking this technique would make amazing personalized birthday cake toppers, too.

This is such a cool idea, Michele, and so much nicer than than the plastic decorations we so often see in the shops over here in the UK at Christmas! Thank you for sharing, and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party. I’m featuring this post at the party this week. Hope to ‘see’ you there! Wishing you a wonderful week!

What a great idea! I am not gifted at cake decorating, so something like this is both simple and elegant-looking.
