DIY Leaf Mat

November 9, 2016 By: Michele McDonald5 Comments

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves on felt!

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves!I have seen a couple of pretty faux leaf mats (placemats and/or table runners) in stores this fall, but the price tag on them always blew me away. How in the world could they cost that much? I could for sure DIY the heck out of one of those for a fraction of the cost! So that’s just what I did. And I love my new DIY leaf mat!

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves! You will need a sheet of felt and an assortment of faux leaves. These leaves are a sample of 4 different sets that contained approximately 20 leaves each in assorted sizes.

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves! These leaves in particular are perfect for this project because they have not “stem” on them. They have the look of a stem, but there is no chunky plastic piece take up space. That makes these able to lay perfectly flat which is ideal for this project since things will be sitting on top of them.

I chose Beacon’s Zip Dry as my wet adhesive of choice. It dries quickly and is a flexible glue. Apply the adhesive to the bottom portion of each leaf that you add to the felt.

Start with the largest leaves and glue them to the outer edges of the felt sheet. Layer leaves, working your way to the center of the felt. Press each leaf down firmly before moving on to the next.

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves!Work your way all the way to the center of the felt, working with the smaller leaves the closer to the center you get.

Set something heavy on the leaves until the adhesive is completely dry to be sure they stay as flat as possible.

DIY your own leaf mat decor by layering faux leaves! The leaf mat can be used anywhere! On a side table, a dining room table centerpiece, or make several more and use them as placemats!
