DIY Trick or Treat Bags

October 28, 2013 By Michele McDonald 9 Comments

Exciting news!! I have completed my first MAJOR sewing project! W00T!!
Recently a dear friend with an absolutely adorable set of twins asked me to make them trick or treat bags for Halloween. It sounded like something I might be able to achieve, especially now that I have a pillow cover and another project I haven’t yet shared with you under my belt. I thought I could totally give it a go IF I could get some advice from my favorite seamstress… And she totally pulled through!
These bags are a team effort with Bev from Flamingo Toes! You can find the directions for making a general tote bag on Bev’s Patterns page.

After seeing that I could make these bags for a friend, I decided to make a smaller set for my boys!
I would say these bags are about half the size of the first set of trick or treat bags.
I used the same general tote bag directions from Bev, but adjusted the measurements to meet my needs.
For these bags I chose black burlap (note: black burlap is SUPER messy! You have been warned.) for the outside and a zigzag cotton fabric for the lining. The mummy and ghost are also cotton fabric. I used black belting for the handles.
For the mummy and ghost, I used pinking shears to cut out the fabric as I did with the ghosts in the first set of bags. The googly eyes are glued to the fabric. I made bow ties from the orange grosgrain ribbon and glued those on to the bags.
Since there was so much black going on with these bags I decided to use orange thread to attach the button accents to the handles. I love the little pop of color they add!
And how fun is that zigzag lining?? Fortunately I overbought and have some more the play with.
I love that the pattern can be easily adjusted to make different-sized bags. And this project has me feeling more confidant with my sewing machine. There will be more sewing in my future!!
