Escaping Skulls Platter

This Escaping Skulls Platter is easier to make than you might think and a super spooky addition your home decor!

Escaping Skulls Platter - easier to make than you might think and a super spooky addition your home decor!I’m not a big fan of horror movies, but I can appreciate a good scary movie. Forget the gore and guts, classics like The Birds and The Shining are my picks for a good scare around Halloween. Subtly spooky is more my game. And that’s what today’s Halloween craft project is all about.

My FloraCraft® Make It: Fun team challenge this month was to use one of their foam Halloween shapes for a fun Halloween craft. Can you tell what I used?

Escaping Skulls Platter - easier to make than you might think and a super spooky addition your home decor! These small foam skulls! They come in a pack of 6 and can be found at your local Joann’s.

Hot glue the skull faces to a decorative charger.

To give the look of the skulls trying to bust through the charger we are going to use some good old Saran wrap from the kitchen. Decoupage the top portion of the skull face then lay a square of the plastic wrap over it. Press the plastic wrap into the eyes and nose.

2. Give the decoupage time to dry a bit then use a heat gun to “shrink” the plastic wrap around the face and smooth it out.

3. Apply more decoupage to the charger around the skull and stretch plastic wrap from top of the face to the adhesive. Allow to dry.

4. Trim off excess plastic wrap from sides then use a heat gun around the edges.

Lightly brush strokes out and away from the skulls to give it a feathery look. Lightly brush the gray paint over the skulls and rest of the plastic wrap as well to add more texture to the look.

Finally, use a darker gray acrylic around the edges of the plastic wrap as well as on the skull crevices (eye sockets, nose cavity, and teeth) to add shadow.

My boys think this platter is so neat. They can’t believe it’s just foam, plastic wrap, and paint!

Excellent idea! I like the technique how you made it look like the plate has melted and skulls are coming out.
