Holiday Surprise BonBon Cookies

November 30, 2012 By: Michele McDonald16 Comments

I’m super excited to be participating in a GIANT blogger Christmas treats roundup!

Check out the link party below to see 50+ Christmas treats from some creative bloggers.

When I think of my childhood Christmases, one of the things I think of is BonBon cookies. My mom made these with my brother and I year after year when we were small. They were so fun to make and perfect for little hands to handle. Now I get to make them with my boys!

This is the recipe my mom used with us, and it was also used by my grandmother.

Start by beating together 1/2 cup softened butter, 3/4 cup sifted confectioners sugar, and 1 Tbsp vanilla.

Once creamy, stir in 1 1/2 cups sifted All Purpose flour and 1/8 tsp salt.

If the dough seems dry you can add a touch of milk.

Of course BonBons are more fun if they are in festive colors!

Split the dough in half and use food coloring to color one half red and the other half green. This step is easiest done by rolling the dough in your hands. Since the food coloring washes easily off, this is a great step to start getting the little ones involved!

Since the dough is nice and warm now, wrap each half in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about an hour.

The purpose of the BonBon is hold a small surprise inside the cookie. You can put almost anything inside of a BonBon so long as it is small enough.

I am using M&M’s, pecans, cinnamon candies, chocolate chip morsels, and Hershey Kisses. Other items you might use are mini marshmallows, gumdrops, cherries, or other flavored morsels.

Once the dough is ready to come out of the refrigerator, pull off teaspoon-size pieces, flatten, add your “surprise”, then roll the dough into a ball.

The BonBon containing large surprises may require a little bit more dough.

The kiddos will have a great time adding their little surprises to the cookies!

I rolled half of my BonBons in sugar before cooking them.

Space the BonBons 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake for approximately 12 minutes.

Keep an eye on them to be sure that they do not brown on top.

The BonBons I did not sugar I dipped in melted chocolate then topped with crushed candy canes.

You can top them any way you like. Drizzled chocolate, icing, coconut, or chopped nuts would be fun!

Aren’t they fun? And for the children, half the fun is biting into them to see what they find!

Yummy! I think we’ll be making these again closer to Christmas so we can leave some for Santa!
