Monogram Sign

When Who+What{Logos} contacted me about using on of their custom logos in one of my craft projects I was pretty excited. I knew right away I wanted a monogram.

I might have an obsession with monograms!

Its amazing how you can dress something up with just a monogram!

I chose the Formality logo with a simple M from the Who+What{Logos} collection.
Let's get started on how my monogram sign came to be.

This pallet has been living in my backyard for quite a while, and I decided it was high time to put the wood to good use.

I had my husband pry some strips of wood from the pallet and cut them down to size.
 Each strip measures 16" long.

We used some wood glue to adhere the four strips together, and then my helpful husband attached a couple of more pieces of wood to the back and screwed them on for extra support.

The final dimension of the sign is now 16" x 12".

Once the glue was dry, I put on two coats of Valspar chalkboard paint.

I used my Silhouette machine to cut the logo onto white vinyl.

Because of the size of my sign I had to separate the logo into
3 pieces in order for my machine to cut it:
The top scroll, bottom scroll, and the monogram itself.

I was able to easily piece back together the original monogram design and attached the vinyl to the sign.

Since I used chalkboard paint on the sign, I added a little something to the bottom corner with a piece of chalk. My husband and I married in 2003 so I added a simple "EST. 2003" (to be interpreted as Established in 2003).

I love how it turned out! So classic and it will look great anywhere in my house!

This is far from the end of my use of this logo.
I have several more craft projects I plan to use it for!

Disclaimer: Who+What{Logos} offered me a free logo of my choice in exchange for using it in a craft project to share on their blog.

  1. I would love to know if you sell some of the items you make. this monogram wood craft I would love to buy for my sons
new house for Christmas. let me know. thanks

  2. I have a pallet just waiting for a Monigram. One question though.. Does the Vinyl lay into the crevices of the slats ? Or kind of stretch/ lay over those crevices ?

  3. Pinning this from Funky Junk's party on reclaimed wood -- love how you created this and there are so many possibilities with this project!

  4. @April - The only prep you really need to do is make sure there is no dirt or splinters coming off of your wood. A light sanding and wiping down ought to do it. I didn't prime mine, but the chalkboard paint is pretty thick. If you use another type of paint you might want to prime.

  5. I am going to make my first sign and got some fence pieces on freecycle today. What kind of prep do I need to do? What is the best way to clean the wood? Should I prime it? Any extra tips would be greatly appreciated.

  6. @Natalie - Good quality vinyl will stick just fine. When I first made this project I used some cheap vinyl and it ended up pulling off of the wood. I went back and put the good stuff on and haven't had any problems with it. After a couple of weeks I decided to Mod Podge over it, but that was more me being paranoid than anything else. The vinyl was sticking just fine!

  7. I love how this came out. 🙂 I just ordered a bunch of vinyl and may have to put this on my to-do list. 🙂
