Make mini canvases of a sugar skull couple to celebrate Dia de los Muertos!

I have always been fascinated by Dia de los Muertos. It seems like such a wonderful holiday, taking time to remember, honor, and celebrate loved ones that have passed on. I also love the Day of the Dead decor. It’s scary but not scary at the same time. Skulls are dressed up with pretty decorations and flowers and bright colors are used.
I like mixing a little Dia de los Muertos into my Halloween decor. I wanted a sweet couple so I whipped up some mini canvases using acrylic paints.
I found these mini canvases and small easels at Michaels. Aren’t they adorable??
For the paints I used Americana Acrylic Writers in Black and White, the Neon Lights in Knockout Blue, Green Energy, Pink Explosion, and Peach Punch.
I had a set of buttons that were my inspiration for the paintings. First, I drew a skull outline with basic facial features onto the canvas with a pencil. Any mistakes at this point, and I could still erase them and rework.
Once I was satisfied with the pencil drawing, I traced over it with the Black Writer. I added a few extra curly cue details, and a fancy bow tie for my male skull.
Once the black paint was dry, I went back and used an embossing tool with a rounded tip to add small dots of paint using the Neon Lights colors. The male got the blue and green, and the female got the pink and peach.
Finally, I went back and added some stripes of the White Writer to the background for some extra texture.
Once all of the paint was dry I went back and added a floral crown to the female skull. A little paint added to the centers of the flowers completed her look.
Aren’t they a beautiful couple? They are such a fun addition to my Halloween decorations!
