This little tip may just change your life!

Okay, maybe I'm being a little over dramatic. Maybe...

But you WILL love this picture frame hanging tip for creating easy gallery walls!

Where I learned this tip:

While on maternity leave, I had HGTV on in the background nearly every day.

On one of those days I happened to look up when Get It Sold with Sabrina Soto (sadly no longer airing) where Sabrina stages homes for hopes of a quicker sale.

Well, she was preparing to hang picture frames on the wall when she whipped out this homemade tool to mark the perfect placement of the frame on the wall!

So I decided to make my own version of this handy tool, and it is truly the best way to hang a picture frame for accuracy!

Sabrina had a long piece of wood that looked like an extra thick paint stirrer, and to one end she had a screw screwed into it.

I decided to make a scaled down version with a nail and a clothespin (affiliate link) since most of the photos I hang aren't any larger than an 8x10.

I simply hammered a nail into a clothespin.

And if you're curious as to why I used a clothespin its because

1) I have a ton of them and

2) Because the one end can double as an extra thick piece of wood so my nail will stay nice and straight when I use it.

How to Use BEST Picture Frame Hanging Tip

To use my little contraption, I hung the nail in the hook on the back of the frame...

It will catch over the head of the nail so be sure you're using one with a large head.

(i.e. NOT a finishing nail.)

Then I held the frame up on the wall and decided where I wanted it to go.

When I knew where I wanted the frame to go I simply gave the top of the frame a light tap...

You don't need to hit it hard.

The nail is sharp and will make a mark on your wall with just a small amount of pressure

The tap will push the nail into the wall leaving a marker for where I need put my nail to hold the frame!

Did you just have a "why didn't I think of that moment?"

I only ask because I SO did when I saw this on television!

Now do you see why I call it the BEST picture frame hanging tip?

  1. Such a neat idea! It's always hard for me to place them just right especially when no one else is around. I love to hang out clothes so I always have clothes pins! thanks for the idea!

    1. I am totally lost about this one..I have no clue what this is supposed to be for..and I read this several times..a clothes pin to what again? To mark the nail where it is supposed to go? Sorry..help!

    2. @Karoline Seymour, there’s a nail through the clothespin. You use the head of the nail to hook on to your frame & when you get the frame on the wall where you want you tap the frame which makes the nail make a small joke in the wall therefore you’ll know where to hang the picture frame.

  2. I need to rehang a picture frame in my bathroom. I really like your tip about using a clothespin and a nail to get the perfect placement for your frames. That way you don't need to second guess about where it will hang in relation to other photos or art pieces. However, I've seen Velcro tabs that can be used to hang photos as well. Do you know how well those work?

    1. I love those things! As a renter i want my deposit back so i use them everywhere ! And u dont have to buy the expensive ones the same will work for hot glue and velcro for fabric! Yes on the walls!

  3. Oh my gosh, God bless you for sharing this great tip - I am posting it everywhere! I have a "wall of Infamy' with 40 photos of family members going back 4 generations that I took down thinking we were moving. We did not move and I had no photos of the wall to remind me how it went, just a blank wall full of holes. It was such a puzzle I gave up and rearranged, badly!!! I need to do it over and have been dreading it, bugs me everytime I walk by it it is so out of alignment! Yeah Yeah Yeah -

    My weekend project!!

  4. I got married almost three years ago in August. I have three boxes full of pictures that have been needing to be hung up, but I've been procrastinating because of the fear of hanging them! Now, I have confidence to do my wall collage in my study and in our entryway! Thank you so much!!!

  5. I also use a piece of making tape for 2 hanger pictures. I measure the distance between the two hangers so I'll know how far apart to put the nails, & it sticks to the wall as well, to ensure a straight, level line!

    1. @Dawn Almond, you don't have to measure anything. I just stick the tape to the back of the picture and punch a hole in the tape where the center of the hanger loop or triangle is. Then stick the tape on the wall and and make sure it's level. Put nails or mounting hooks into the marked holes. Viola!

  6. I loved your post. It is very easy to use. I have been using one product that I too love and it works for every frame specially wall collages like this one. Simply Hang it. They are little pieces of paper that mark the exact location of the nail. Its perfect!

  7. Totally had that "Why didn't I think of that?" moment! I will always do this now...Thanks! BTW Gavin is my little boy's name too! šŸ™‚

  8. Amazing! Thank you soo much, I was about to buy a laser level but I think I can get by now with using this trick!! -Jessica@GreenPB&Js

  9. So frustrating to see this AFTER I did a photo gallery wall. Awesome idea and will use in the future! Thanks!

  10. We're completely remodeling our house, therefore I will be hanging BEAUCOUP pics on the wall so THIS is the BEST idea I've seen in a VERY long time !! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT !!!!!!!!

  11. I came over from iheart organizing where you had left a comment ~ THANK YOU for this wonderful hint about the picture framing. I will definitely try this!!

  12. I've always used toothpaste on the back of frames to mark the spot, but in most cases, this would be MUCH better. Brilliant!

  13. Oh no, Gwen! I'm sorry to hear that! I made sure my nail was centered on the clothespin and hammered it in really slowly and did not have any problems.

  14. I totally split my clothespin in two when I tried to hammer the nail in ... twice. Crazy! How do you get your nail in without splitting the wood?

    1. You can also use a Dremel and a fine drill bit to aid you Gwen. Gently drill through the clothespin then, tap your nail though it after. Also note, she is using a thin nail, as it is for the "marking" for the hang, but not necessarily the exact hardware for said picture or decorative item.

Me? I do a mix, a paint stirring stick with a nail, and a tiny, tiny dab of toothpaste on the tip of that nail. I had to glass covers crack "gently tapping" to make a mark. The nail on the paint stick keeps my fingers out of the way, and the tiny dab keeps the glass covers in the frame "UNCRACKED!!!" Lol!!!!

  15. Thank you! Soooo much better than my measure and mark method that I've been doing...especially when I have a MILLION pictures to hang!

  16. This is fantabulous! Thanks so much for sharing with us. (Found you through a pin on Pinterest, btw!)

Enjoy your time with your new baby, they grow up so fast!

    Peace, Judi
